Thanks for visiting Expat Heather! I’m an international educator, writer, and expat mom currently living in South Korea. On this site you’ll find things about living abroad, teaching in international schools, travel, hiking, and expat life.
Before my mom came to visit us in Vietnam in February 2014, I made up an ambitious list of things for us to do. We didn’t manage to check them all off, but here are my ideas of things you can do with family to show them around Saigon and the Mekong Delta.
Ben Tre is one of the tourist destinations in the Mekong Delta that’s closer to Ho Chi Minh City. You could visit Ben Tre on a day trip, either by bus or by boat.
For a boat trip to Ben Tre, check out Buffalo Tour’s Mekong Delta Le Jerai Cruise.
For cheaper options to visit the Mekong Delta, check out bus trips by The Sinh Tourist. Be aware, the prices for these trips are excellent, however there may be an unexpected stop or two at a “craft center” or other souvenir shop.
For a day trip or overnight on a private boat, contact Mango Cruises. If you have enough people, you can charter a boat and go wherever you’d like.

Our daughter was born in Ho Chi Minh City in February 2014, and in order to apply for her US citizenship and passport we needed to first apply for a birth certificate from the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice.
The process was not detailed on the Ministry of Justice (MJ) website in entirety, but after 3 visits to the MJ, lots of stamps and signatures at various offices, and 1 hysterical breakdown (by yours truly) on the MJ steps, I can now share the process for those who need to get a birth certificate in Vietnam. Hopefully this will save you time and money, and prevent you from ending up yelling and crying about Vietnamese bureaucracy outside a government office.
Wow – with two kids time REALLY goes by quickly. In her first 6 months she has:
She is one busy baby! Turning 6 months old brought about a lot of transitions. I went back to work full-time, and she started eating solid foods regularly. Her repertoire of foods includes rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, brown rice cereal, peas, carrots, fish, apples, and sweet potatoes.
Arianne’s fifth month has been another month of travel and transitions. We spent most of this month in the US, and just last week I went back to work full-time. Until then I was breastfeeding exclusively, but now Arianne is having 1 or 2 bottles per day while I’m at work.
I’ve been able to pump 4 to 8 ounces each day during a 30-minute break, however it drives me slightly insane to stop everything I’m doing and pump for 30 minutes. The electric pump doesn’t work well for me, so the manual pump it is.
Arianne had a very busy fourth month! Here are some of her firsts:
